After successfully bouncing back last fall/winter from a 2 year hiatus due to Covid, CTR is back again and excited for a full season ahead in 2022-23.

Last season didn’t come without its challenges based on Covid as CTR was still not able to run the UCC league; fortunately, The Hangar and Sherwood Forest Park were operational with successful Covid protocols in place. “It was an amazing feeling to be able to see familiar faces again, toss the egg around with teammates, and not have to rely on our ‘home workout routines’ to keep the cardio up!”

With two leagues running again, Canada Touch Rugby was able to host the ‘CTR Cup’ in 2022 which was held at York University prior to The Toronto Arrows final season game. This was an amazing experience for the top 4 teams as they showcased their skills on the stadium pitch with family, friends and even a few Toronto Arrows watching closely to see who would hoist the CTR Cup. Once again, the defending 2019 champs ‘Bohica’ were victorious in a close match over ‘The Beers’ successfully reclaiming their throne.

In addition to having the CTR Cup again this past season, Canada Touch Rugby was also able to host a summer touch tournament at Sherwood Forest Park in Burlington with BBQ and beverage tent, music, prizes etc. with many thanks to our sponsors which included The Pint Toronto, Rugby Coffee, Moosehead, The Toronto Arrows, and of course the Burlington Centaurs.

As the summer season of club rugby in Ontario is coming to a close, CTR is heading into its 12th season, and is once again ready to provide playing opportunities this fall/winter for anyone looking to learn the game, maintain skills and fitness, or maybe even believe they can hoist the CTR Cup! Canada Touch Rugby is excited to be gearing up for another season which promises to be another great year of friendship, fitness and the odd miraculous rugby play. In fact it will be CTR’s 9th season of co-ed touch rugby with home to now over 300-400 members.

Last season CTR witnessed a new Championship squad ‘Bohica’ (an original CTR team) who dethroned the Upper Canada College champs ‘Tigers B’ who were looking for a 3 peat performance in the Grand Finals. The ‘One Hitters’ representing the Burlington league finished 3rd and have been a top team since they joined 3 seasons ago.

CTR will no doubt continue to offer a competitive and fun rugby environment this season, but we also are happy to announce our continued off-field partnerships including The Pint who will again be providing members with gift certificates and an excellent venue for our various celebrations. We are also happy to announce that Refresh-It will be keeping our gear smelling fresh by providing our teams with samples this season. Additionally, The Toronto Arrows have offered to give our winning teams with free tickets to a home game next season, not to mention we will continue to look for opportunities with Aedelhard who provided last years winning team with some unbelievable apparel. The stakes are growing for the Grand Finals!

One final exciting piece of news is that o’neills is back again to supply our jerseys. CTR will also be setting up an online shop prior to the season where teams will be able to order personalised gear (in addition to jerseys) with your own custom team designs/logos. More announcements to come…

CTR fall leagues begin mid-October and are available at the Toronto (The ‘Hangar’) and Burlington (Sherwood Forest Park) locations. The winter seasons kick off in early January and are operating at the above locations with the addition of Upper Canada College in Toronto. All CTR leagues remain a co-ed format where we continue to encourage participation from all age groups, skill-sets and abilities.

For teams looking to take advantage of the early bird price, be sure to register your fall team before September 10th to receive $50 off the membership fee. Winter team early bird will be announced later.

Canada Touch Rugby is set to host the Grand Finals this coming Sunday from 1-3pm at The Hangar Sport and Event Centre. This year is unique in that the top three teams from each respective league (U.C.C., The Hangar, and Burlington) will be competing to hoist the ‘CTR Cup.’ In previous years, only the top team from each league was invited to compete.

“With additional top caliber teams in this years finals, we feel this tournament will be a true representation of the CTR Champions considering the growing talent pool in each of our member leagues,” Steve Shortly says.

What ever happens on the day it should be a fun day for all considering the Grand Final week is a ‘bonus’ rugby week for all teams invited to compete. With that being said, it sure would be nice to have bragging rights for this one. Teams competing are posted below and for those interested, the tournament bracket will be posted in the next few days.

Good luck to all teams participating this coming weekend!
